AMERICAN MUSIC CENTER LIVE MUSIC FOR DANCE PROGRAM AWARDS NEW GRANTS
- $212,450 to Support Live Music and Newly Commissioned Music for Dance in New York City and New Jersey
-
NEW YORK – The American Music Center (AMC) has made grants totaling $212,450 to 27 dance companies in New York City and New Jersey as part of the 2008 round of the Live Music for Dance Program. The program helps dance companies meet the expense of musicians’ rehearsal and performance fees, as well as composer commissioning fees and copying costs for performances happening in New York City or New Jersey. Over the past 22 years, Live Music for Dance has distributed over 500 grants totaling more than $5 million to over 200 dance companies. For the fourth year in a row, thanks to a generous grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the program has included a separate funding category earmarked for New Jersey-based dance companies.
Current and past awardees represent a broad and diverse stylistic range in both arenas of music and dance. The unique nature of this program benefits both large companies performing established repertoire as well as smaller companies presenting new work. Funding from this program will support dance performances with live and/or new commissioned music throughout New York City and New Jersey in 2008, and will feature over 150 musicians and 27 composers will be engaged as a result of this round of the program.
This year’s grantees include: Anita ChengDance for “Rites of Summer” with live music by Gordon Beeferman; Cornfield Dance for “Dance for a Small Room,” featuring a commission from Koven J. Smith; Dansology for “Blocks of Continuality/Movement-Live Cinema (Blocks),” featuring a commission from Koosil-ja Hwang and Geoff Matters; Human Behavior Explorers for “The Prosaic Body,” featuring a commission by Michelle Nagai; Moving Theater for three new works featuring commissions by Nathan Davis, Mario Diaz de Leon and Du Yun in collaboration with the ICE Ensemble; SHUA Group for “1000 Nows,” for live music played by Stephen Cooper and ensemble players; Stephen Petronio Company for
“Beaty and the Brut,” featuring a commission by Fischerspooner, and Yin Mei Dance for “City of Paper,” featuring a commission by Richard Marriott. A complete list of grantees is attached.
The Live Music for Dance program was founded as the Pocket Orchestra Project in 1986 by the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), and the American Music Center. NYSCA conceived the idea for the Pocket Orchestra Project and co-administered the program for its first three years. From 1989 to 2003, Live Music for Dance was a program of the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, administered by the American Music Center. Beginning with the 2005 round of grants, AMC assumed sole responsibility for the program, including fundraising, application review, and grant administration.
“Live Music for Dance is essential to the dance community,” stated Joanne Hubbard Cossa, Executive Director of the American Music Center. “We are grateful to our consortium of funders who realize the importance of this unique program, and have made it a vital and growing resource for dance companies, composers, and musicians.”
Lead funding for Live Music for Dance in 2008 is provided by the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, the Baisley Powell Elebash Fund, the Harkness Foundation for Dance, The New York Community Trust – LuEsther T. Mertz Advised Fund, and the New York State Council on the Arts. Funding for New Jersey-based grantees is provided by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.
Since its founding in 1939, the American Music Center has been a leader in providing field-wide advocacy, connection, and support for new American music and the artists who create it. AMC’s programs and services help make possible countless performances of new music each year. AMC has a long history of providing financial support to the field and administers nearly $1.5 million in grants each year. These efforts have served to further the Center’s mission of building a national community for new American music.
Guidelines and application procedures for the program may be found on the AMC website at www.amc.net. The next application deadline will be in fall of 2008. |
